2006 Plaque: Harry W Smith at " BEVERLEY LODGE" 41 Westboume Grove

Before the unveiling of the plaque our Chairman. read a condensed history of our outstanding former Borough Engineer and Surveyor. So came the vital moment when Mrs. Pashby, in a coat of blue to match the plaque, pulled the cord to unveil the focus of the afternoon's meeting together.
Afterwards a welcome afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Metta Pheakstone and helpers at the refurbished St. James Centre.
The Society wishes to extend its special thanks to Mrs. Pashby for her co-operation in the plaque project-and carrying out the unveiling. In expressing our thanks to all those who attended Keith Johnston must come in for special mention. He has consistently sought to present the claims of Harry Smith on our attention and did so with great effect at our 2005 A.G.M. At the end of that presentation he suggested his subject as being worthy of a Blue Plaque.

When Harry W. Smith retired in October 1933, Mr. F. A. White, presiding at a testimonial gathering in the Council Chamber, described the Borough Engineer as "one who entered this town nearly 40 years ago and has done nothing in his life amongst us but to beautify everything he has touched". Continuing, White said he could remember "a town having from north to south many eyesores which had been obliterated and in many places beauty spots had sprung up which it was never anticipated would be there".
